According to the Wall Street Journal, Barnes and Noble is prepping to release an e-book reader that utilizes their own e-book store released in July of this year. The most interesting part of the equation--it will use Android, Google's own mobile operating system.
Android software development kit has been notoriously widely available to the public--allowing both professional and amateur programmers develop software for the OS. Couple that with the fact that B&N's e-book reader will have a 6" eInk touch-sensitive screen with software keyboard (much like the iPhone's), and we could have a winner.
Just when you think Kindle's got a handle on things, leave it to someone else to throw a wrench into it.
Cheers,
Zach
