Amazon recently announced that they will be lowering the price of their flagship e-book reader, the Kindle from $299 to $259. They've also announced an international version of the Kindle that can be utilized in most countries in the world retailing for $279--both of which are cheaper than the original price (amazon.com).
This announcement comes at the heels of leaked information that Sony and a number of other big players (including Apple) could be developing and releasing their own answer to the Kindle in time for the holidays. Apple has always been on Amazon's radar for a couple of reasons--aside from the sheer number of people using iPhones, there have been e-book apps from the very beginning of the iPhone's inception, only lacking a coherent way to download e-books. If iTunes were to upgrade its software to include e-books aside it's already outrageous selection of music, movies and TV shows, Amazon would be shaking in their boots.
With rumors of an Apple netbook tablet computer, it would make sense that with a larger screen and 3G (or 4G) capabilities, they could have a killer e-book reader on their hands...
For more (rumored) information on Apple's (probably) upcoming tablet computer, see the Gizmodo article: http://gizmodo.com/5370252/apple-tablet-to-redefine-newspapers-textbooks-and-magazines.
With the lowered Kindle price, should I take the dive? More research needs to be done.
Cheers,
Zach
