The ePub Format

The ePub format was introduced by Adobe as a standard way to purchase or download digital books in a format that would be supported by many different devices and programs. Much like Windows' "PlayForSure" program which tried to standardize digital music files after mp3's had already been introduced, the ePub format offers an advantage because it's getting in at the beginning of the game--and with a number of big players backing it including Sony and Barnes and Nobles' new eReader (which I'm extremely excited about), the Nook (pictured).

Amazon's Kindle chose not to support the format, even though Sony did, and now B&N will be supporting as well. Will the Nook be enough to push ePub books into the limelight and offer tech-savvy readers a single format to end them all?

I really hope so.

Cheers,
Zach
